Picking defenders in Fantasy Premier League used to be relatively straightforward.

Find the strongest defences. Look for full-backs who attack. Fill the bench with cheap starters.

The introduction of defensive contribution points changed that.

Centre-backs such as Gabriel, Marcos Senesi, James Tarkowski and Virgil van Dijk can now produce points even when their team concedes, while attacking defenders such as Nico O'Reilly and Daniel Muñoz can still earn through goals and assists.

For 2026/27, there is another wrinkle.

FPL has retained defensive contribution points but changed the Bonus Points System to reduce some of the overlap that heavily rewarded centre-backs last season. Defenders still earn two additional points for reaching 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles, but clearances, blocks and interceptions now contribute less heavily towards bonus points.

That means the best FPL defender isn't necessarily:

The most attacking defender.

Or:

The player from the best defence.

We need a combination of:

minutes, clean sheets, attacking threat, defensive contributions, fixtures and price.

The best FPL defence does not necessarily mean buying the five highest-ranked players. Price structure matters. Most squads will benefit from combining one or two premium defenders with cheaper starters and a £4.0m or £4.5m bench option.

How I ranked the defenders

The FPL Assistant ranking considers five things.

Minutes security comes first. A £5.0m defender playing 90 minutes every week can be more useful than a £6.0m player constantly at risk of rotation.

Clean-sheet potential remains enormously important because four clean-sheet points are still the foundation of defender scoring.

Attacking threat separates players from otherwise similar defences.

Defensive contributions give centre-backs and defensive-minded players another route to points.

And finally there is price and squad structure.

Gabriel might score more points than a £4.5m defender, but the important question is what the extra £3.5m prevents you buying elsewhere.

That is why this is an FPL ranking rather than simply a list of the best footballers.

Use the best opening fixtures when two defenders have similar minutes security.

1. Gabriel – Arsenal – £8.0m

FPL Assistant verdict: BEST DEFENDER OVERALL

There is no avoiding the price.

£8.0m for a defender is enormous.

Gabriel is now one of the most expensive defenders in FPL history.

But his price hasn't appeared from nowhere.

Gabriel scored 209 FPL points in 2025/26, the third-highest season total ever recorded by a defender. He combined 18 clean sheets with three goals, five assists and 22 defensive-contribution points. He blanked in only six of his 30 starts.

That last statistic explains his appeal.

Most defenders rely heavily on one source of points.

Gabriel doesn't.

Arsenal concede few goals.

Gabriel attacks set pieces.

He produces defensive contributions.

And his minutes are normally secure when fit.

Arsenal also begin at home to promoted Coventry before facing Leeds at home in GW6.

Is Gabriel worth £8.0m?

That depends on the rest of your squad.

Gabriel, Haaland and Bruno Fernandes alone cost £35.5m.

If owning Gabriel forces you into several weak attacking selections, I'd rather downgrade in defence.

But if you can construct a squad you like around him, there is still no defender I would rather own throughout the season.

2. Virgil van Dijk – Liverpool – £6.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: BEST ALTERNATIVE TO GABRIEL

If £8.0m feels too expensive, Van Dijk is my preferred premium alternative.

Liverpool have priced him at £6.5m, while Kerkez and Frimpong are £5.5m and several other Liverpool defenders come in at £5.0m.

Van Dijk's appeal is security.

He returned 175 points last season, while his defensive involvement gives him another route to points beyond Liverpool clean sheets. Specialist analysis recorded around nine CBIT actions per 90 last season, putting him close to the threshold required for defensive-contribution points.

And then there are the fixtures.

Liverpool have an average opening-six FDR of 2.8, joint-best in the league. The official FPL Scout specifically identifies Van Dijk as Liverpool's best defensive option because of his all-round output.

Andoni Iraola's arrival adds some tactical uncertainty, but Van Dijk's own place is not the bit I am worried about.

Van Dijk or Gabriel?

Gabriel has the higher ceiling.

Van Dijk costs £1.5m less.

That £1.5m can make a substantial difference elsewhere.

For managers trying to own Haaland and Bruno, Van Dijk could therefore be the better squad pick even if Gabriel remains the better individual defender.

Rating: 9.0/10

3. Nico O'Reilly – Manchester City – £6.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: HIGHEST ATTACKING UPSIDE

O'Reilly is probably the most interesting defender in the game.

He produced five goals, four assists and 14 clean sheets last season and averaged 5.4 points per start — second only to Gabriel among defenders.

That is exceptional attacking production for someone classified as a defender.

His £6.5m price reflects it.

The new Bonus Points System could also help attacking defenders such as O'Reilly. He was among the most-tackled defenders last season, and players are no longer penalised in BPS simply for being tackled.

Then we have Manchester City's fixtures.

City face Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry, Manchester United, Sunderland and Liverpool in their opening six, giving them several obvious opportunities for clean sheets and attacking returns.

The problem

Pep Guardiola has gone.

Enzo Maresca is now manager.

O'Reilly's previous attacking freedom does not automatically carry into the new system.

That prevents me putting him above Van Dijk today.

But if City's remaining pre-season matches show O'Reilly occupying the same advanced positions, he could easily become my No.2 defender.

4. Marc Guéhi – Manchester City – £6.0m

FPL Assistant verdict: SAFER MANCHESTER CITY ROUTE

Guéhi scored 179 points last season, finishing second among FPL defenders.

His performances remained strong after moving from Palace to Manchester City, averaging 4.9 points per start at City compared with 5.3 at Palace.

He now costs £6.0m.

The attraction is obvious.

You are buying into one of the best teams in the league, with favourable early fixtures, without paying O'Reilly's additional £0.5m.

The downside is ceiling.

O'Reilly offers far more obvious attacking potential.

Gabriel has his set-piece threat.

Van Dijk combines attacking set pieces with heavy defensive involvement.

Guéhi feels more dependent on clean sheets and steady returns.

That can still make him an excellent FPL defender — just perhaps a less exciting one.

Rating: 8.5/10

5. James Tarkowski – Everton – £6.0m

FPL Assistant verdict: THE DEFCON MACHINE

Tarkowski might be the most unfashionable £6.0m defender in FPL.

He might also be one of the safest.

He earned 44 points from defensive contributions last season, second only to Senesi among defenders, after years of producing the type of defensive numbers that fit the system perfectly.

Unlike many defenders around him, there isn't a new manager or completely new tactical system to price in.

That is important.

His opening fixtures are mixed, with Manchester United and Spurs in GW3-4, but Everton then host Ipswich and visit Hull in Gameweeks 5 and 6.

The 2026/27 BPS adjustment slightly reduces the bonus upside of centre-backs who already benefit heavily from defensive contributions, so I wouldn't simply extrapolate last season's points.

But the core FPL appeal remains.

Clean sheet? Points.

Ten defensive actions? Points.

Set-piece goal? Potential haul.

Reddit discussion has also repeatedly flagged Tarkowski as an overlooked option, although some Everton supporters are watching what happens with the Tarkowski-Branthwaite-O'Brien hierarchy if Everton add at right-back.

So I like Tarkowski — but I want to see Everton's final pre-season defensive shape.

Rating: 8.4/10

6. Daniel Muñoz – Crystal Palace – £5.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: BEST ATTACKING MID-PRICE DEFENDER

Muñoz is almost the opposite of Tarkowski.

You aren't primarily buying defensive actions.

You're buying a defender who regularly gets into attacking positions.

Muñoz scored 136 points last season, only one more than Tyrick Mitchell, but his attacking potential is why he costs £5.5m while Mitchell is £4.5m.

At £5.5m, he can compete with defenders from stronger defensive teams because he doesn't require a clean sheet to return.

The new BPS rules may also make attacking full-backs relatively more attractive compared with pure centre-backs. FPL has intentionally reduced some of the overlap between CBI and bonus points while making changes that help attacking players and full-backs.

The uncertainty is Palace's manager.

Pierre Sage has replaced Oliver Glasner.

If Palace retain a system that allows Muñoz to operate aggressively as a wing-back, he remains one of the game's best attacking defenders.

If his role becomes more conservative, the £1.0m saving on Mitchell becomes very attractive.

Rating: 8.3/10

7. Harry Maguire – Manchester United – £5.0m

FPL Assistant verdict: BEST EARLY VALUE — IF HE STARTS

Maguire isn't as glamorous as Gabriel or Muñoz.

But FPL isn't a glamour competition.

Manchester United start against Hull and Ipswich.

Those are exactly the fixtures we want from a £5.0m defender.

The official FPL Scout has already highlighted Maguire as one of the strongest options in the £5.0m centre-back bracket because of United's opening schedule.

Centre-backs can also benefit from defensive contributions, while Maguire provides genuine attacking threat at corners and free kicks.

There is one condition.

He needs to be secure for minutes.

If pre-season confirms him as a first-choice centre-back, £5.0m could make him one of the best compromises in the entire game.

If his place remains uncertain, don't force it just because United have good fixtures.

Rating: 8.1/10 if starting

8. Tyrick Mitchell – Crystal Palace – £4.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: BEST BUDGET DEFENDER

This may be the most eye-catching price in defence.

Mitchell scored 135 points last season, the highest total of any 2026/27 defender priced below £5.0m.

He costs just £4.5m.

The obvious comparison is Muñoz.

Muñoz costs £1.0m more because his attacking ceiling is greater.

But that doesn't mean he will score £1.0m-worth of extra FPL points.

Mitchell's value depends heavily on Pierre Sage maintaining Palace's wing-back structure. If he does, Mitchell could be the defender who allows you to own an extra premium attacker without destroying the quality of your back line.

I would rather start Mitchell regularly than spend £4.0m on a promoted defender simply because he is cheap.

Rating: 8.0/10

9. Pedro Porro – Tottenham – £5.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: HIGH UPSIDE, BUT MONITOR THE SYSTEM

Porro remains one of FPL's naturally attractive defenders because of what he can do going forward.

He costs £5.5m this season.

There is also an encouraging defensive angle.

Over Tottenham's final seven matches under Roberto De Zerbi last season, Spurs conceded a league-low 10 big chances.

That is a potentially powerful combination:

attacking full-back + improving defence.

The problem is Tottenham have rebuilt heavily at centre-back, and we still need to understand exactly how De Zerbi wants his full-backs to operate over a larger sample.

Porro is therefore a player I really like for the season without quite putting him in my initial top five.

Rating: 7.9/10

10. Milos Kerkez – Liverpool – £5.5m

FPL Assistant verdict: UPSIDE ALTERNATIVE TO VAN DIJK

Van Dijk is my safe Liverpool choice.

Kerkez is the aggressive one.

Liverpool have priced Kerkez at £5.5m, a full £1.0m below Van Dijk.

Under Iraola, there is every reason to monitor Liverpool's full-backs closely.

If Kerkez gets consistent attacking licence, his combination of Liverpool clean sheets and assists could make the £1.0m saving extremely useful.

But Van Dijk has a far clearer minutes profile and a better defensive-contribution route.

So today:

Van Dijk for security.

Kerkez for upside and budget.

That decision could change once we have seen more of Iraola's Liverpool.

Rating: 7.8/10

What about Marcos Senesi?

Senesi deserves his own section because last year's numbers are extraordinary.

He finished on 175 points, produced six assists and earned 50 defensive-contribution points — the most of any player in FPL.

The problem is everything around him has changed.

He has moved from Bournemouth to Tottenham.

He now costs £6.0m.

And Spurs have Senesi, Van de Ven, Danso, Van Hecke and Romero among their centre-back options.

Defensive contribution is partly player-driven and partly system-driven.

We should not automatically assume Senesi's Bournemouth numbers transfer directly to Spurs.

If pre-season establishes him as one of De Zerbi's first-choice centre-backs, he immediately comes into consideration.

Until then:

Watchlist rather than top-10 lock.

The £5.5m Arsenal problem

One of the most interesting defender situations isn't a specific player yet.

It is:

Who becomes Arsenal's secure £5.5m defender?

Gabriel costs £8.0m and Saliba £6.0m.

But Calafiori, Hincapié, Mosquera and Ben White are all £5.5m.

The official FPL Scout has already highlighted this price point as potentially excellent value, particularly while Saliba's situation creates opportunities elsewhere in the defence.

If one £5.5m Arsenal defender becomes clearly first choice before GW1, that player could jump directly into the top five of this ranking.

I would not guess which one yet.

Minutes first.

Price second.

Are £4.0m defenders worth using?

Yes — but mainly as bench enablers.

Every defender from promoted Coventry, Hull and Ipswich started at £4.0m this season. Fantasy Football Scout counted 46 defenders at £4.0m overall, including 26 from the promoted clubs.

The official FPL Scout specifically highlighted Charlie Hughes of Hull and Bobby Thomas of Coventry as potential bench options because of their defensive involvement and attacking potential respectively.

But Coventry and Hull have difficult opening fixture schedules.

So I wouldn't necessarily build a defence that requires a £4.0m promoted defender to start every week.

One as fifth defender?

Absolutely.

Two £4.0m defenders just so you can squeeze another premium attacker into the XI?

Possible — but you are giving up squad depth.

Defensive contributions have changed how we should pick defenders

This is one of the most important FPL lessons from last season.

A defender no longer necessarily needs a clean sheet to give you something useful.

Defenders earn two defensive-contribution points when they reach 10 combined clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles in a match. The award is capped at two defensive-contribution points per match.

That makes defenders such as Tarkowski and Van Dijk inherently more reliable than they would have been under the old scoring system.

But don't blindly buy whoever had the most defensive contributions last season.

FPL adjusted the Bonus Points System for 2026/27 partly because centre-backs were receiving both DC and bonus rewards for similar actions. Clearances, blocks and interceptions now earn BPS at a slower rate.

That slightly improves the relative appeal of attacking defenders.

So my ideal FPL defender now has multiple routes to points.

That is why Gabriel remains No.1.

What About Josko Gvardiol?

Josko Gvardiol remains an important Manchester City defender and signed a new long-term contract this summer after returning from the fractured leg that disrupted the second half of last season.

He is not currently in our top 10 because Manchester City already offer strong alternatives in Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guéhi, but his role and fitness make him one to monitor as the season begins.

Best defenders by category

Should you go big at the back?

I would not build a squad with Gabriel, Van Dijk, O'Reilly, Tarkowski and Muñoz.

The defenders are excellent.

The opportunity cost is not.

Haaland costs £15.5m.

Bruno costs £12.0m.

Other premium attackers also take a large chunk of the £100m budget.

My preferred structure would currently be something closer to:

One premium defender

plus

two £4.5m–£5.5m starting defenders

plus

one or two cheap bench defenders.

That could mean Gabriel plus Mitchell and a £5.0m option.

Or Van Dijk plus Muñoz plus Maguire.

The exact combination matters less than avoiding the mistake of evaluating defenders in isolation.

An £8.0m Gabriel isn't competing only against a £6.5m Van Dijk.

He is competing against:

Van Dijk + £1.5m spent somewhere else.

That is the real FPL decision.
