A differential is normally defined as a player owned by fewer than 10 per cent of FPL managers. The attraction is obvious: when a low-owned player returns, relatively few rivals benefit.
Low ownership is not a reason to pick someone. The player must still have secure minutes, a suitable fixture, a credible route to points and a place in your wider squad structure.
Ownership changes quickly before Gameweek 1, so each option below must be checked against the live game before publication.
Harry Maguire - £5.0m
Manchester United open against promoted Hull and Ipswich, giving their defenders immediate clean-sheet appeal.
Maguire also offers set-piece threat and a stronger defensive contribution profile than several cheaper team-mates.
Risk: medium. Confirm that he remains first choice after the final friendlies.
Verdict: Consider if he stays below 10 per cent ownership and starts the final pre-season match.
Tyrick Mitchell - £4.5m
Mitchell outscored every other defender priced below £5.0m last season.
His value depends on Crystal Palace continuing to use him in a role that allows attacking involvement as well as clean-sheet points.
Risk: medium because a new manager can alter the shape.
Verdict: Monitor the system, then consider as a rotating defender.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall - £6.5m
He combines attacking returns, defensive contribution potential and an opening schedule that rates well over the first six Gameweeks.
At this price, he can also be moved to many other midfielders without a major squad rebuild.
Risk: low to medium.
Verdict: Consider if ownership remains below the differential threshold.
William Osula - £6.0m
Osula started Newcastle's final seven league matches last season and scored five goals in that run.
The price is attractive, but his position becomes weaker if competition for the central role increases.

Verdict: Monitor until the starting role is confirmed.
Bobby Thomas - £4.0m
The Coventry centre-back offers goal involvement and defensive contribution potential at the minimum defender price.
He should mainly be viewed as a bench enabler rather than a Gameweek 1 starter because Coventry's opening fixtures are difficult.

Verdict: Consider for the bench, not the opening XI.
How many differentials should you own?
One or two calculated low-owned picks are normally enough. Filling the squad with differentials creates unnecessary risk and can leave you exposed to highly owned players with strong fixtures.
